November 5, 2026
Every December, the volunteers who turn the Historical Society's Heritage House and Gardens into Santa's Village put the same practical note on their schedule: "We encourage you to come early in December to avoid raining day cancellations." At the garden at 126 South Mason, rain can cancel Santa's visits.
That note fits the rest of the calendar. In 2026 the Village's three biggest holiday traditions fall in the six days from Tuesday, December 1, through Sunday, December 6. If you live within reach of Branch Street, that first week is the main event, more than the stretch right before Christmas.
Here is how the opening week lines up, based on the organizers' and event listings:
Saturday and Sunday each pair an afternoon at the garden with an evening event a few blocks away. A household could see all three traditions in one weekend without leaving the Village.
Elegant Evening is the more grown-up of the two weekend nights. The Christmas in the Village organizers call it a free event and a tradition in the Historic Village. Visitors walk through the Village, do some holiday shopping, and enjoy local food, live music, spirits, Christmas lights and decorations. Festive attire is welcome but optional. Santa appears as the special guest.
The listing that gives the date comes from The Gallery at 213 E. Branch St., which places the event on Saturday, December 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. The organizers' own Elegant Evening page has the full event description and is the place to confirm the date and times before you go.
The evening's focus on shops ties back to why the organizers run any of this. Their stated mission is to "spread joy and cheer during the Holiday season while supporting our local businesses." An evening of late shopping on the first Saturday of December puts Branch Street merchants at the start of gift-buying season.
The next afternoon belongs to the City of Arroyo Grande Recreation Department. According to Visit SLO CAL's listing, the Jingle Bell Dash is free for children from preschool through 6th grade, who "chase the Grinch down Branch Street." Families can pre-register through the City's catalog at arroyogrande.org/catalog or sign up at the event starting at 3:30 p.m. Races begin at 4 p.m.
The parade follows at 5 p.m. A second Visit SLO CAL listing says it "begins promptly at 5 p.m." The Recreation Department's listed phone number is (805) 473-5472.
The parade has stayed near the start of the season for years, though the exact date shifts with the calendar:
In each of those years, the parade fell on a Sunday around the turn from November to December, not in the week before Christmas. The 2026 date keeps that pattern and puts the parade the day after the Elegant Evening date in The Gallery's listing.
The two evening events each happen on one fixed date. Santa's Village is the one tradition you choose a time for, and the weather can decide for you. Visits take place at the Historical Society's Heritage House and Gardens at 126 South Mason, and the organizers recommend coming in early December so rain doesn't cancel your visit.
The hours make that easier than it sounds. The weekday slots, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m., are in the late afternoon. Weekend hours, 1 to 4 p.m., end before both evening events that first weekend. On Saturday, December 5, a family could visit Santa, have dinner, and be on Branch Street for Elegant Evening at 5. On Sunday, a 1 p.m. visit leaves plenty of time before the 3:30 p.m. Jingle Bell Dash sign-up.
Santa's Palo Mesa Pizza Party is on Sunday, December 13, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the same Heritage Gardens address. Donations are suggested but not required. The full Santa schedule, including the last visiting days, is posted on christmasagvillage.com.
The Christmas in the Village organizers describe themselves as an all-volunteer 501(c)(6) nonprofit with a P.O. box under the AGVIA name. They run both Elegant Evening and Santa's Village at the Historical Society's property. Their site asks for help "caring on our over thirty-five years tradition" through sponsorships and donations.
"Our team of volunteers are made up of enthusiastic local citizens with a deep love and appreciation for our cherished historic Village, who are excited to carry on the years of tradition while at the same time developing new experiences, attractions and entertainment for kids of all ages."
Their stated goal is "a unique and memorable experience for locals, visitors and tourists to enjoy." The group says email works best for sponsors, donors and anyone who wants to help: [email protected]. The City runs the parade and dash, and the volunteer group runs the evening shopping event and the garden.
For residents, the timing follows from that setup. The volunteers ask people to come early, the City's parade usually lands on the first Sunday of December or close to it, and Elegant Evening is listed for the night before. If you want to see the whole Village holiday season, plan for the week of December 1. For the rest of the Village year, from the Sunday concerts and farmers markets to the merchant guild that formed after the bridge reopened, our Arroyo Grande neighborhood page collects our coverage of the Village.
